Well, it turned out to be a broken wire near the fuel pump relay (in the
engine compartment). So I guess I now believe in coincidences.
The reason it took until now to diagnose/fix is that the camper was ~500
miles away and we finally mobilized to get down there and fetch it.
Full disclosure, I did not find it. I replaced the fuel pump relay, tried
a new ignition switch (just by unplugging/replugging the connector),
cleaned up a couple of grounds in the engine compartment and the
connections to the coil, and nothing worked. I didn't notice any broken
wires. Oh well.
A garage, Metric Motors in Anderson, CA, looked at it after it got towed in
Monday afternoon (thanks, Better World Club!) and by COB it was running
again for their basic diagnostic charge (1/2 hour of the basic labor
rate). I found that they had good reviews on Roadhaus.
Now we have motored home with no problems.

Oh, and our new black dog, Skeeter, seems to like the camper just fine!
And another funny thing: When I tried the new ignition switch, our "key in
ignition/door open" chime went off. It doesn't work with the
recently-replaced ignition switch that's in there.... Maybe it's not
completely compatible...?
