John, all this advice you have goutiness good, but it is all over the
place--literally--mostly because you didn't give all that much to go on. It
would be good if you could tell us all that was recently done: has the
engine been out, and if so, what was done? I know you are fastidious about
things like new bearings, etc, but do you know these things god done? In an
event, if I didn't know anything about you are your car and you mentioned
to me that your car was difficult to shift IN and OUT of certain gears,
which is what I gather you are saying, I would tell you go get your linkage
adjusted by professionals.
As you know, I do pretty much 100% on my vanagon work and have for many
years. But I got into the game situation a you--or so it sounds, not
knowing more--with my Diesel Westy. I sent the tradition out to be rebuilt
and when I got it back the shifting was so bad I thought I had been scammed
by the rebuilder. It wasn't that, of course, it's just that the car had
been adjusted to accommodate for the wear that occurred over 230,000 miles
and the linkage was just enough out of whack to make it not work in the
lower gears. I finally gave up and had Johnson's put two mechanics on it,
which is what it takes to do it right. It was perfect, so much so that I
sent my 1990 Wolfsburg in right after it.
Best money I ever spent on a Vanagon, I think.
