The whole exercise started when I decided to put a big battery up first where the spare tire goes. I tried a swing away mount on my rear bumper ( home made aluminum bumper) but I wasn't happy about the vibrations in that set up. As an aside, soon after cutting up that mount I happened to see a go Westy swing away mount on a go Westy bumper. The amount of movement in that set up was much more than I had on mine. I was surprised by the vans owner saying he didn't find it a problem. It would bug me immensely.

So I had the choice of making a copy of the stock vw swing away, much like what Gary Lee sells, or doing a hatch mounted unit. I decided on the latter. Both have their pros and cons. There are definite cons about the hatch mount. You need much stronger hatch struts.

So I made one. Very quickly and not really a polished example. But it worked and still works fine. My friend Simon had his over sized spare badly awkwardly mounted up front, then he mounted his tire to his paulchen rack. He bought very strong hatch struts and it worked well for him. But it was a lot of carrier just for a tire, so I made another hatch mount for him.

Then I made another for Nathan, who works for dr. Bjorn, the new owner of the skylight guys business.

On that one I lowered the tire position on the rack and I moved it to he left a little. Just to reduce the amount of rear view blockage.

I don't like the offset, but Nathan does.

Now I'm making three more units. Still prototyping.
