Your in a real pickle now. BTDT more times than I care to remember. You are never supposed to unscrew that all the way ! To change the upholstery the knob comes of the shaft. It’s on splines so you need to pull it off, easier said than done, but it will come off. Now to repair your problem, yes remove the upholstery and cut the foam then you will see inside why you cant simplify screw the rod back in ! Once you cut the foam away you will see the problem and then knowing you, you will find a way to fix it and put it all back so it’s pretty again.
