Still possibly the problem, I'd take Jim up on his offer and find out now
that we know he doesn't have leaky injectors.
They do strange things when they go, and that can start with intermittent
weirdness. First, I had rough, cycling idle for a few weeks, then it
wouldn't idle at all. Since it's an automatic (son's rig actually) I got it
home keeping one foot on the gas pedal and the other on the brake to keep it
from dying at stops. Fiddled around with replacing the temp 2 & O2 sensors,
and then on starting it would go right up to 2000 rpm and stay there.
Swapping in a used one fixed it. When I looked at the receipts that came
with the van it had be diagnosed with a bad ICM (DUH, I didn't know what
that was then), and that tech just left it on the floor back there, where it
was quite wet. That finished it off quickly.
Putting an unsealed microprocessor in a wet location was not a great idea,
but they did last a long time. If we were keeping this engine I'd have
gotten him one of the rebuilt units that is sealed instead of a 30 year old
used one. My understanding is other VWs with Digifant FI have this unit
built into the ECU, a much better idea.
Stuart

Stewart & Jim
Dennis didn't say that it went to 2000RPM on its own ~ He has to
"raise the idle to about 2000 rpms until it clears out 15-20 seconds."
