Yes! I misstated this all wrong. On the earlier vans there are no relays on the fuse box. The fan relay mounted on the side is replaced in the later years by the one on the fuse box. With AC on the later this relay provides an intermediate speed when the AC calls for it. Then there is the high speed relay with a separate feed off the battery and that fuse link with the 70A relay.

Sorry for the confusion, Dennis

Sorry, you are mistaken. The 82-85 watercooled vans don't have a rad fan relay in the main relay panel. They have the high speed relay mounted up high, right next to the coolant level warning relay in 83-85. 82 has no coolant level relay so the fan relay is up there all by itself. This is the same location that 86+ vans with 450 watt fan motors have it. All models with a relay up there use a relay of the same physical size but the relay for the 450 watt has a higher amp contact rating and .375" spades instead of the .250" spades of the relay for the smaller fan motor.

86+ with the smaller fan motor use the #5 position in the main relay panel for high speed. This same relay panel location is used for medium speed in 86+ with 450 watt fans and factory A/C.

If you don't hear the relay then the motor isn't going to be getting power from the relay. > > Mark > >
