Since Don has a "diesel Vanagon" 5 speed there are less expensive r&p set options for him if it comes to that. Here, brand new for $100, slightly lower gearing.

Also since he has a fairly undesirable one to begin with he should be able to find another good used one for much less than the more desirable ones cost. He has a 5.43

Depending on how bad it is, you could need to add the cost of a new ring and pinion (even bigger bucks). There is no way to know the final cost until they rip into it. With just a little luck, you won't need one. > > Stuart > > -----Original Message----- > From: Vanagon Mailing List [mailto:vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com] On Behalf Of Don Hanson > Sent: Monday, April 25, 2016 11:08 AM > To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM > Subject: 5sp transmission rebuild? > > I've finally got money saved to have my 5sp tranny rebuilt but I'm undecided now about where to send/take it to have the work done...German trans in Bend is "quoting" me $1900 with a big core fee, and they want to dismantle mine before they will give me an actual estimate on anything... > The "other" shop in duval, Wa.
