We've long known he has a DX code tranny from an 83 diesel van and those are 5.43 like I said. That was the only 5 speed code in 2wd models sold in the US.

The gear carrier housing and the main housing are consumables. The tranny guys need to have high core values and I have on many an occasion had to tell a customer the tranny is gone so go find another. Transmission whines usually start out as bad bearings with the whine coming from the miss-aligned gears. Continued operation is a decision for increased cost. Back when VW offered rebuilds as long as the damage was from within they would accept it as core. Same for engines. Those days are gone. These parts are becoming rare and when available new they are pricey. You have a unique box with the 5 speed and that gear set. If you want a crafts person to overhaul you have the hourly rate plus parts. Start with 10 hours labor as the baseline. There goes $1,000 right there. > > Dennis > > -----Original Message----- > From: Vanagon Mailing List [mailto:vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com] On Behalf Of vw_van_fan_Mark > Sent: Monday, April 25, 2016 4:23 PM > To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM > Subject: Re: 5sp transmission rebuild? > > Since Don has a "diesel Vanagon" 5 speed there are less expensive r&p set options for him if it comes to that.
