Another issue with the oversized pumps is the penetration of the pin far enough into the cam so it doesn't wear off the tip...the gear is a press on to its shaft(pin), and can be pressed back further to be a better long term fit in the cam slot...it's a measure twice and press back only thousands of an inch at a time thing, but the longer geared pump makes a world of difference...longer studs are also required, and the flat steel plate (beetle) still had clearance to everything...

With those oversize pumps you also need to inspect them for proper outside diameter. If it slips in easy it is probably no good. I have come across a few that were about .005" too small. If not a tight fit they can leak at both the inlet and outlet both of which will reduce oil pressure. Send the defective one back.
