Looking at the damage I would say that the engine or at least that side has been over heating and probably more than once. Looking at the rust and corrosion not only on the surface but also the coolant channels indicates a leaking system regularly being topped off. The damage around the exhaust guide could be from heat or coolant. Look at the studs very carefully. If they are rusted or pitted in any way they will need to be replaced. That will be the next failure as the surface damage will make for stress risers and the tensioned studs can break there. You should probably pull the liners and inspect the pistons and rings. They could be damaged from the coolant or the overheating. If coolant was getting into the oil even past the rings and in small quantities (not yet milky) there could also be corrosion of the bearings.

Hey all,
Karma caught up with me. After 14 years of scoring used motors and
swapping them out, I now have several needing major work. Had to do the dreaded head "gaskets" today as the right one blew out after suddenly
running rough as could be. Had to be done. Yank the motor (you're
thinking, "Oh, here it comes "), nope, went fine for a floor jack job.
Start pulling the exhaust (you're thinking, "Oh, here it comes, broken exhaust studs"), nope, aside from wrenches not fitting, not one on badly
rusted nuts. I start pulling the heads, (you're thinking, "Oh, here it
comes, you pulled the barrel out"), nope, just missed that too. We'll,
what's the problem you ask?
Well, I did have two bent push rods and tubes.

Hmmnnn..... First head off and cleaned up real nice. Little to no
pitting. Nice. Second one??? Ughhhhh. In case you didn't notice in the
pix, the one with the valves open is OFF the motor. They're jammed
open. Combustion tore into the seat and spark plug area. Badly. Only
heads I have in my stash have cracks between the seats. Anyone run heads
like that or is that a 200 mile death sentence. If the latter, Anyone
got a clean single head looking for a cheap date?
Thanks,
TJ
