The point with the shoes is not the arch matching the curve of the drum. They are all the same tat way. The problem is positon of the shoes after mounting. Many are too short on the bottom and the problem is that the shoes only contact the drum near the top. This increases wear at the top and reduces braking effect as the friction area is greatly reduced. It can also over heat the lining at the wear area causing it to glaze, crack, and even separate from the shoe.

Thanks for that Alistair. I'll check these GW shoes against a new drum. More out curiosity than anything. I found the Samba forum 1000 page long debate on shimming the lower anchors and shoe radius or arcing informative but admittedly, I still have trouble *fully* understanding how one would determine if that's required. Do folks mark the new shoes, install, test wear pattern then determine if shims are needed? I'd think one could measure for that. Another topic I'm sure.

On the GW shoes, I noted that the adjuster lever *seems* a little thin, and that part does see some "action", as I'm sure you know. There's a spring pulling down on it and the adjuster bar butts up against it. i.e. On the shoes currently installed, I noted a minor (normal I'm sure) mark at the adjuster bar where this lever sits.

That adjuster lever failure might just be a freak thing in your case but it certainly speaks to keeping an eye on things eh?

I'll have a close look at my new GW shoes before installing them. On the currently installed shoes, it's interesting to me that one e-brake lever pivot point wore so much (or was loose when new)
