You suggested a striking wrench

"Tools! It's often about the tools. I have a 3/4 drive impact that gets those buggers off no brakes at all. Do you at least have a 46mm striking wrench? Put the wheels back on and put the van on the ground. You should be able to get the nuts loose with the right tools. Impact of some sort is often needed. They can stuck well and just getting a bigger wrench doesn’t always work. If you have an air compressor get an impact wrench and socket. If not get (rent or borrow) an electric impact.

Dennis"

So why suggest it if you now say it's hard on the bearings?

Seriously this is not a good idea but if you must at least wear good eye protection. When that micro piece of steel goes flying it will also be hot so it sticks into your cornea really well. > As for tool justification also consider the impact using that striking wrench can do to the wheel bearings. > > Dennis > > > -----Original Message----- > From: Vanagon Mailing List [mailto:vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com] On Behalf Of Neil N > Sent: Saturday, May 7, 2016 9:59 PM > To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM > Subject: Re: Remove rear axle nut no e brake? > > Thanks Alistair. So I pu on my " very very best of Alabama" CD, started thinking like a farmer (and I do mean that in the best possible way. I clearly lack that kind of logic at times) and used that EMPI tool, with a hose clamp like this, (image): > > https://picasaweb.google.com/musomuso/RearBrakes#6282128869655584402 > > held one sledge hammer stationary on the tool then used another sledge to hit that hammer head, They came off!
