This is what happens when a crimp goes bad or the connection between male and female terminal gets high resistance. Total power used in the circuit goes down, but power is also dissipated in local heating at the high-resistance point. This is also the main cause of false blowing of fuses -- bad connection right at the fuse puts additional heat that gets conducted into the fuse element and prematurely melts it. Most of the 1.9l panels I've looked at, the nylon sleeve has been melted off the terminal of the 8-ga wire that feeds the panel.
