If we are striving for accuracy...then it is worth noting that The Netherlands and Holland are also not the same. Amsterdam is a city in The Netherlands. Holland is a region in The Netherlands. "The Netherlands" is the country.

I've been there many times, it's a wonderful city. You can get an all day pass for the canal bus and use that to get around the city (there are also water taxis). Basically these boats go up and down the canals to marked stops, and it's a great way to see the city. The Nieuwmarkt area always has lots of people and lots of good restaurants. Great Thai one there. Check out the streetview:

There's a park outside of the Van Gogh Museum which is a wonderful place for a picnic.
