Route 66 cuts through a tiny corner of Kansas, and that's where those original vehicles are. One of them runs and can be hired out. Not only that, we met Dean "crazy legs" Walker, who was the inspiration for the crotchety old man in the flick. Diane and I have met so many folks and heard so many stories it's just amazing. All one has to do is stop, look and show some interest. Only problem is it takes forever to get anywhere. We are only in Chandler OK. Some of that is due to trying to stick to the old '26 to '32 route. Was on the Ozark Trail today. Bus is still running fine. We were warned to check everything every day, as we are now heading into the hottest part of our journey. Always open to someone close to Rt. 66 who might have a driveway. RV parks only thing along here. No campgrounds. Kinda slim pickins'. Place tonight, full utilities, no picnic table, only one person at a time in bathroom, quite large trailers on both sides of us. OTOH, parked in so we can see the pasture running to the horizon. Steer and bulls came by with their calves. some trying to get dinner from mom as they walked. We stood hand in hand watching the last orange light of the setting sun below the clouds, and the fireflies lit up the fields.
Were having fun and haven't killed each other.

I did some disaster relief work after the big tornado hit a few years back, and I would like to show the wife where I worked and see how things turned out. Some times it takes a long time to rebuild. The motherroad is quite a trip. Rt 66 has had many realignments that bypassed towns and small business that sprung up along the road to support the growing traffic. Those realignments often spelled disaster when the traffic dried up. We have been trying to stick to the older route and have seen turkey tracks in the then freshly poured concrete, the restored Gay Parita Sinclair station. and stayed in the Wagon Wheel Motel one rainy night. There is so much more, but we have to plan the next few days. The Bus is running well and are looking forward to more miles and many smiles.
