Having either the crank or cam bearing tunnels align bored can also change the gear size requirement.

Since 'forever' cams in VW oppossed four cylinder engines .. air-cooled and waterboxer have had a number stamped on them.. such as +1 , +2 etc.. goes from minus something to positive.

this relates to the size of the gear .. or how much it engages with the gear on the cranshaft that drives it.

Pretty sure I saw in Bentley where they say , with crank and cam laying in the left side of the case ( I always 'build' in the left case half since it has the distributor.

( I put the distributor in first btw .. and never remove it ....you don't want the shaft that drives it or two shims on it to get out of place..they can jam on the crank gear ..BTDT ...about 40 years ago on an air-cooled ) ...

anyway ..Bentley shows testing for how much the gears engage .. if it's too tight ...turning the crank counterclockwise will cause the cam gear to lift up ..showing it's binding or engaging too tightly.

if it's loose ..you'll be able to feel a little backlash. I believe the goal is zero backlash .

( and aside note ..you oughta see how Subaru and toyota deal with this ..they use a split two-part gear with spring tension between them ,a split gear, like on the cam......this keeps gear mesh just right no matter what, no slop or backlash ..no binding ..very neat )

I rebuilt a 2.1 a while back. It had a tired cam in it. The old cam was a -1 ( minus 1 ) which is what I put back in ..it was the same case of course. That checked properly during assembly.

if starting with a different case ... what I would do anyway ...I'd order a plus 1 and see how it fits. 'most' of the cams I've seen were a plus 1.

the 'pitch' of a gear, I believe ....is related to the angle of the gear teeth. .. Similar to the pitch of a propeller. This number is about how properly the two gears mesh.
