We had a local Aamco that did things right. They guy had plenty of experience rebuilding Audi 5000 transmissions in the 90s which were basically the same as our Vanagon auto boxes. He would even stockpile some Audi 5000 transmissions in the shop so that if we needed parts or a good case he would have them. I have dealt with other AAMCOs around the USA calling me for parts, etc. for rebuilding Vanagon transmissions. They seem like they want to do a good job and do it right the first time. If you went with them and you had a problem they would be taking it back out and repairing it again until they got it right. I like German Transaxle but if you have a problem with them, you will be responsible for pulling it, sending it to the West Coast, waiting, and then putting it back in when it comes back. I think I would rather deal with a local shop that says they can do it. If you were travelling and were never going to be back in the area again, then it might be another story. But if you are living right there, then a local AAMCO would be great because of the hassle of R&R and also shipping a trans.
