.... maybe excessive play in wheel bearings causes the lip of drum to rub on the backing plate? I don't recall feeling any real amount of axial play at driver side wheel. I did a trailing arm R&R not long ago but can't see how removing-installing the hub assembly would make any difference.

I"m beginning to think that makers of aftermarket parts may redesign things a little due to customer input. IF that's true, one thing affects another. If company A doesn't talk to company B .....
