Yes. That trick can take out the play and prevent the inner race from spinning on the spindle. A professional method would be to knurl the shaft.

I think you mentioned this before Dennis, but would making 3 equal spaced punch marks at spindle where bearing inner race seats help? Or have I misunderstood what is meant here?
