Alistair got it right. One caveat on the bleach, Dennis. Bleach at the concentrations recommended by CDC, FEMA, and USAID does not kill ALL disease causing micro-organisms, though your statement that it kills all bacteria and viruses is correct. Some protozoal agents, especially those that encyst, are not killed. Among those is _Cryptosporidium_, which causes an unpleasant diahrea for most, but is really serious for those with compromised immune systems or simply a weakened constitution, like the elderly and chronically ill. Because municipal water systems sometimes use chlorine without filtration depending on their water source, or even in some cases if they do use filtration, this "bug" causes illness in populations with municipal water in rare instances.
