On the full Westy that second wire is the used as the chassis ground for the refrigerator control relay. For the relay to energize the starter cannot be operated and the alternator must be charging. If you look at the relay you will see the blue wire from the alternator warning lamp. The warning lamp circuit is also needed to help get the alternator started. The Fridge relay loads the circuit down. So simply connecting that wire to ground may also make the alternator require additional speed to get it "activated". When adding a starter boost relay is important that this extra wire remains with the starter solenoid and not with the new relay coil. Failure to pay attention to this can result in the added relay remaining energized after releasing the key from start or even energizing unexpectedly while driving. Same goes for wiring for the brake warning light circuit and vehicles with cruise control.

I have a question about starter solenoid wiring on an '86 AT full Westy. This has air conditioning but does not have an auxiliary battery.

The #50 terminal on the starter solenoid has two wires connected to its electrically identical twin push on spade connectors. One is a Red w/Black stripe large (6.0) wire that supplies current directly from the ignition switch ST terminal.

The other is a Red w/White stripe of somewhat smaller size that I can't find in the wiring diagram. Does anyone know what this does?

This question is, of course, about original wiring and not an added auxiliary load reduction relay. Also, It not about the battery cable or the large (6.0) Red wire connecting to the B+ alternator terminal.

Thanks,

Ed
