You can do some repair on the odometer without pulling the needle. Usually when a shaft comes out it is due to one of the gears being cracked or just heat damaged enough to lose the press fit which at that point you need to be really good with super glue or get new gears. The bouncing could just be bad cable. Screeching and other noises is a worn out speedo head.

Speedometer still works (a little bouncy in the 30 - 50K range). Provided I do not break the needle during surgery on the odometer, it should be fine.
