Subject: lube rear heater assembly
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8

Hi,

I have a rear heater to replace the one that caught fire. I do not want this one to catch fire. I'm wondering what people recommend for lubing this thing.

Here are pictures:

Short version: I have it out of the van, pre-install. I am going to put lubrication on the ends of the axles that you can see in the pictures. I would like list input on this plan.

Here's the result of my research on this:

I found descriptions in the archives of how to take it apart (this is for the front one, I'm guessing you could adapt or use as-is for the back):

This is more than I want to get into, unless it's my only hope.

The fan that I bought turns with little effort but it does not keep spinning if I am not pushing on it.

In the pictures (referring to my pictures, from the imgur link above http://imgur.com/a/QF6xY ) I have a shot of the end of the axle from each side.

From reading the archives, I see people recommending the ZOOM spout oiler

And there were also a few recommendations for Marvel Mystery Oil:

Sounds like the ZOOM stuff is made for exactly this kind of application.

Any thoughts?

I'm also thinking of doing the Mullendore port ( http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=386923) for the front blower. Can't remember if I lubed it when I had it out, and more lube won't hurt.

One thing I would like to know from those that have worked on these is whether I should expect the fan to keep turning if I give it a push, or if it's normal that it requires continuous force to keep it moving. That could at least give me some information on whether the lube is doing anything.

I really appreciate you guys and all the wisdom you've dispensed over the years.

mike
