Alistair,
One tip on the high mounted brake light (which I think every Vanagon should have since the taillights are so low): Get the GoWesty kit, it sticks onto the window behind the curtains. The casing fully encloses the light, so you don't get any reflection like you would if you mounted a brake light on the rear shelf. You really don't want the back of the van bathed in bright red light at night every time you step on the brakes!
I've looked for it for less on other sites, but they are competitive and have nice instructions. http://www.gowesty.com/product-details.php?v=&id=23669
Since I live in Seattle, which now has the nation's fourth worst traffic, I've also added the DRL kit. Very much worth it given the number of distracted drivers today: http://www.gowesty.com/product-details.php?v=&id=23669 Also competitively priced and with excellent installation instructions.
Stuart

Despite my knack for whacking my head on things, I haven't done it yet on that edge. A matter of time I guess.
Good idea about logo etc on the brace. My mind was on the " high mounted brake lights could maybe be incorporated " track and I didn't think of logo.
My mill is all manual, but it would be easy to take a blank to local cnc router, or waterjet, guys and have something done.
It never ends does it?
Cheers
Alistair
