There is no filter.  That black stuff reported is the disintegrated foam sealing material used in there.  With the '86 and newer A/C housing you can remove the rear baffle to see what's inside, but to service anything really requires dropping the entire unit.  See the Bentley for that multi-hour job.

I was just eyeing those to flat head bolts on the bottom of my rear 'shelf' 
that houses the A/C.  Sounds like those are for support but I wondered, is there not a filter somewhere on the A/C system that I should clean?  I'm thinking after 26 years it's due.
