In the list archives this has been talked about before and it's claimed to have been done with good results by just doing it (buy the kit & follow the directions), then again you'll find those who say it's not simple & everything needs to be changed. My list of AC related vanagon posts is on my other computer... I have to admit that doing repairs that are not necessary (let alone modifications) while on the road doesn't leave me with a comfortable feeling. FWIW ice water & a misting bottle can work wonders in the dry heat our west. Good luck!
