In your messing around you may have gotten it so rich you fouled the spark
plugs. Check them first. If so the O2 sensor is most likely also fouled and
if lucky the time period was short enough that you didn't destroy the
catalytic converter. Now as to what could have happened. You could have
something as little as a poor connection at either the AFM or the O2 sensor.
Those sliding contacts on the airflow meter can be very troublesome. They
don't have that much "wipe" pressure and just a little corrosion makes them
intermittent. Also, the wires break inside the insulation or fail at the
crimp. Most true AFM issues are in fact contact issues. When lucky changing
the part takes care of the contact problem and you think you did good.
Changing parts like this you need to learn how to test for proper operation
including O2 sensor voltages both disconnected (open loop) and connected,
(closed loop, in control).

Subject: GOWESTY AFM no start problem
Here we go,
My Westy 2.2 WBX was running almost great after traveling 2500 miles to
Ontario and back to Vermont. Decided to install the new reconditioned
GOWESTY AFM today.
I disconnected the O2 sensor then installed the AFM started the engine with
the O2 still disconnected idled great. Shut everything down reconnected O2.
With engine warn went for a short trip on our dirt road accelerated engine
it started to miss fire then died! Got it started at idle then accelerated
and it died again. Got it going again, limped back to the farm at idle only.
Now it won't start at all! I reinstalled the old AFM and it made no
difference. Still no start. Engine turns over, disconnected the return to
fuel tank line fuel comes out ok. I can hear the fuel pump running. I think
the filter and pump are working., 2 days ago I changed the hall sensor wring
with a new connector from GOWESTY, cleaned the hall sensor ground lead. It
ran great after that installation.
I'm about to try the"No Start tool" wiring kit that was suggested to use on
the site. But before i did this I thought I would ask for ideas.
