Thanks Stuart. Ya, likely my ham handed-ness cause this but for sure the speedometer needle was very tight to spindle. If I recall, there was a small gap between face of speedometer and end of metal part of needle that slips over shaft. Thought maybe a tool could be put at that point to prise the needle up and off.
