Ignition timing also effects emissions, especially the formation of NOx. I know many don't care but that is why our engines are low compression and de-tuned. The only thing our engines have besides the low state of tune to control NOx is the 3 way catalyst and O2 sensor system. VW did what they could to save money including not adding EGR. Tampering with settings is a primary reason that almost all adjustment capability has been taken away from current vehicles.
