There are 2 relays in the engine relay box. Both must click on for the fuel pump to run. Your symptoms sound like the typical bad or loose connection in the main fuel injection power supply path. I have seen it many times. Usually it is at the alternator red wire but can also be at the starter red wire or the wiring box red wires.

One of the 2 relays clicks on when the key switch has sent power to the ignition coil. This relay powers up the ECU with power from the red wire path I mentioned above. The ECU then turns on the fuel pump relay for a second.

If the ECU doesn't always get power it won't always run the pump relay when it should.

It's not currently happening and I suspect it's why my van won't start.

I normally hear some relay click off around the fuse box when the fuel pump stops, but I can't figure out which relay this is.

Thoughts?
