John, What you have going on there is wrong. Something is wired wrong, you have an incorrect relay or the AC pressure switch is defective. It is likely the fan is cycling off when it is needed the most.

From the radiator switch there is only low speed and very high speed. From the AC system there is low speed and a higher speed, both which rely on that fan resistor. The high speed from the radiator completely bypasses that resistor.

Thanks Ken. On ol' Red, my '88 GL, when I turn the ignition switch to "ON" but not to the start mode, and then turn on tne AC , the high speed fan immediately kicks in. If I go ahead and drive it, the high speed fan runs a while then cycles. Seems to do what is is supposed to do.

However, on the Carat, that little test does not work. The HS fan does not turn on, period. Yet when driving, with AC off, and in stop and go traffic, the low speed fan does cycle. Engine hasn't ever gotten hot enough to operate the mid speed fan.

For both the engine cooling and AC on ol' Red, the fan seems to be running properly.

John
