All,

The starter is out …. and the underside of the engine is looking almost sparkly after the pre-surgery scrub.

I only had to remove the intake hose between the throttle housing and air box to get at the nut on the end of the top bolt. Frankly, it took far longer to clean the engine and tranny than it did to remove the starter (which was maybe 20-minutes).

Does any one have specifications for the solenoid and starter? I would like to do some further bench diagnostics as an educational experience. What range of resistance should be measure across the coil of the solenoid (from pin 50)? What should be measured across the starter?

I tried a simple bench test and got no response from either the solenoid or starter … that said, my bench batter was pretty low, so it is charging now and I’ll test the starter again in the morning.

I think I’m going the route of Karl’s adapter and either a LActrical #17755 (their replacement for the Bosch SR0409X) if I can find one or a renewed Bosch. The local FLAPS carries BBB starters which appear to be rebuilds inside Bosch shells … does anyone have any experience with this brand?

If I go with a TDI starter and adapter, I would like to install a relay to remove the need for all that current to flow though the ignition. Dennis’ objections are noted (I still need to study-up on the conflict with the fridge), but is there a better way of going about it which will achieve the same end objective (not have all the current pass through the ignition).

Roy
