years ago, a fellow on the list (Matthew Bulley) did the sound proofing to the extreme, first if I recall it correctly on a Bus and later on a Vanagon. The domain was lost (http://www.bulley-hewlett.com/VWindex/ <http://web.archive.org/web/19990508050731/http://www.bulley-hewlett.com/VWindex/>) but was recovered under http://www.shagadelic.org/VW/info/gmbulley-soundproof/. But this link is dead too. There is some info of this http://www.type2.com/library/heat/intrir1.html and http://web.archive.org/web/19990508050731/http://www.bulley-hewlett.com/VWindex/. If i recall correctly, he did take the bus apart later and noticed unexpected rust probably due to choice of material he used. that was in 2008 and you should be able to search for his name in the archives.
