I'm guessing this suffered at the hands of the shop mechanic testing the limits of the Subaru 2.5. I'm told the van continued to drive and it took some doing before it was realized that the van was actually moving due to the front wheels being driven by the driveshaft. The shaft has some significant wear marks so I can't tell if this was a clean or twisting break. However the race-nut for the pinion bearing will not loosen so my gues is this was a twist off mess done by dumping the clutch in first gear with the engine at high revs.

Dennis:

Any indication of a materials defect in the shaft?

Did it just let-go or was there a monster amount of torque applied?
