I can't see your photo, but yes .. I've seen welded pinion shafts break. I suspect (without seeing it) that you may have a cut & spliced pinion shaft. Welding is done when a good pinion head with buggered shaft is spliced to a good shaft with buggered pinion head removed. This operation has been done in off-road for over 3 decades now.
