Subject: Intermittent squeak at a wheel
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8

Hi all.

Can a rear axle nut torqued to slightly less than spec cause an intermittent squeak at that wheel? I thought bad bearings made a rumbling sound. Maybe squeak is caused by a brake drum rubbing on back plate.

Symptoms:

Squeal is mid pitched, doesn't happen very often, but usually happens after turning corners going up steep hills. If I step on the brakes, the sound usually goes away. It doesn't sound like a brake squeal, I'm not certain which wheel it's coming from. I've spun each wheel by hand, no squeal or bad sounds. But.... The right rear wheel has what feels like too much in-out play. I recently replaced the brake back plates and injected grease into the roller bearings, installed new seals, shoes etc.

Id thought if I retorqued the right rear axle nut, it might reduce some of that play but this post suggests it likely wouldn't and that I might be dealing with a rear bearing issue.
