Scott The feature you question is standard on german cars and is, I believe, mandated. It's purpose is safety when parking at night on the edge of narrow rural roads, village lanes etc. It aids your fellow drivers in seeing your car. Very Intelligent IMHO. I wish my NA vehicles had it.
