Sounds electrical. Does it cranks the same, but not spark, or does it crank more slowly? Did you measure the voltage and current available to the starter when starting in neutral versus park?

I’ve never owned an automatic, so am probably talking through my hat, but doesn't the path from the ignition pass through the shift sensor on its way to the starter selanoid?
