Thanks VERY much for your input. I (as do many others, I am sure)
really appreciate your valuable, detailed input on this email list!
I was already contemplating a transmisison rebuild this winter in
preparation for an engine replacement (of some kind) in the near
future... so this further reinforces the urgency.

Next is the needle bearing on the input end of the main or input shaft or the ball bearing on the other end. An oil change won't solve any of these conditions. If it is the main pinion bearing continued operation will damage the ring-pinion gear set. This will significantly to the cost of overhaul or a core charge if replacing with an exchange. It is probably time to do what you need for this trip and then plan for the overhaul while the van is down for the season.
