If you have a Vanagon with the automatic, I can set you up with a Bosch starter that's about 33% bigger, fits perfectly, and packs a punch. That's about $199 with free delivery to your door. This is if you want to keep it stock but have more &@!!$ to turn that motor over. Core charge is $90 (sorry, a necessary evil) and comes with a 1 year warranty included. A 2 year warranty is $20 and the 3 year warranty is $30. That's defective materials or workmanship for two (2) or three (3) full years from the purchase date.

If you have a manual, I'd go with the TDI starter and the adapter plate from Karl.

Regardless of what you choose, unless it's an emergency, do NOT get a starter from Advance, AutoZone, etc. BTDT (in an emergency) and it's a losing situation. It WILL fail and fail soon.

$300? For a starter? Seems expensive

Reports such as yours, plus the actual cost of the Go Westy starter, is why I opted for an adapter plate (I used Karl=E2=80=99s plate) and a {gear redu= ction} diesel starter from the VW TD/TDi engines (prior to the Pumpe-Duse).

Is this typical of this type a starter? For a while I noticed that the brushes get stuck then I'll tap the starter and it would turn over, now that wont work anymore. 12.5 volts a starter. Connections are clean + light application of dielectric grease. Is there a better starter out there? Gowesty wants $299 for a new one. I have no idea as far as a warranty. Will call them tomorrow. > My Westy is running great except now for the starter. > > Dennis Jowell > Scotch Hollow Farm > Newbury, Vermont
