​It can be done and requires cutting the rear of the clamshell and modifying the hinges to lower the rear so the tire fits. Once done the tire will fit inflated though it is tight and some people find deflating a bit makes it easier. Even with the tight fit on rough roads the tire can shift and rub against the steering shaft​ but you can either try a brace to keep it off the shaft or secure the tire to the clamshell. I don't think I still have the instructions I followed when doing ours but am pretty sure I found them on the Vanagon Forum on TheSamba.com. If you like I can take a couple photos of ours but it will be a few days before I could get to it.
