Subject: Speedometer Repair: VW Vanagon 1986 2WD Auto
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8

The speedometer on my 1986 VW Vanagon Westfalia (Canadian km/hr) camper 2.1L auto shows speed, but the odometer section is not moving (both the total accumulated distance and the trip distance).  Resetting the trip distance cleared the accumulation, but the section did not turn afterwards. The options that I see are:1. try to fix it myself.2. Send the entire speedometer head to a specialty shop for repair.  I see that Go Westy, Van Café and others offer repair services. In looking on the internet, there appear some sources for the two gears that are the most likely suspects for repair on the odometer section of the speedometer head. So what is the general consensus on repairing the odometer section of the speedometer head, and how does this compare to just sending the entire speedometer head out for repair, and using your time for other items on your personal list to fix? Your thoughts? StuartOttawa  Source for replacement speedometer/odometer head gears: ref: http://www.odometergears.com/products/Volkswagen/Mechanical+Speedometer/19 Information on speedometer head repair: ref: VOLKSWAGEN VANAGON SPEEDOMETER REPAIR | | | | | |
