Lots of Westys sold in California models 84/85/86 came with the single middle seat. For 84 it was only for the Wolfsburg full campers. I had both one of these 84s and an 86 that came to me with their original single middle seats. The key is the same as the glovebox and keyed alike. The lock assembly is held in place by a sliding clip and the same assembly is used on both the glovebox and the middle seat. I have swapped them around a few times when I have sold single middle seats. I have owned a dozen or more of these single middle seats over the years, purchased from people who had them in the garage or side of the house. I still have more than I need.

As far as I can tell the number of unique glovebox keys for these years is pretty small.

I doubt they were originally keyed alike, though I can find no documentation from my old VW archives addressing the issue. In fact, there is no mention of the middle seat compartment. I would think they could be rekeyed, if we can get them apart. The glovebox locks are very difficult to take apart, because the plastic has now become very brittle due to age. We don't rekey them, though we can generate keys for them. I've never, in 16 years of servicing VW locks, run across the middle seat lock, so I can't say for certain about the rekeying except that it should be possible. > >
