There are others with more experience than me, but you will almost certainly never realize a satisfactory return on your investment. Although one can say the same about Buses and Vanagons, especially those in poor condition, it is my belief that Buses are far more desirable than Beetles in the general market. They seem to becoming more iconic than the Beetle. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I'm near the Otter Creek Brewery and Two Roads Brewery, who use the Bus in their labels, packaging, and marketing.
The rarer VWs like the convertibles, Karman Ghias, Things, Splitties will yield a greater return. There were millions more hardtop
Beetles produced. There is probably least one Beetle like the one you describe in every town here in Vermont. These Beetles are too far gone, maintained poorly, and/or irresponsibly restored.
And it looks like the Vanagon will continue to grow in desirability also, most likely because they still have considerable utility. Beetles are sadly just toys.
