Don't assume that the sprockets were in time from the previous owner... I
couldn't figure out why my VW Fox 1.8 powered Vanagon was so sluggish until
one day i decided to replace the timing belt & found that the camshaft,
crankshaft, and the intermediate sprocket were all out of time with respect
each other.  It ran much better with the new belt and all three shafts
properly synched.
