The window regulator is the likely culprit. There is a vertical bar in the door that has a movable carrier on it. The windo hass sits on it. The carrier goes up and down, opening and closing the window. The carrier is pulled up or down by a cable. There is a plastic capstan at each end end of that vertical bar that guides the cable. The rivet that holds the bottom capstan has more than likely come loose, allowing so much slack in the cable that the motor can run, but not move the carrier. The cable could also be fouled in the gear and pully arrangement driven by the motor. In any case you must pull the regulator assembly to fix it. The R&R is described in the Bentley. If the motor is running, the simplist way to repair it is to get a new regulator from Van Cafe. It comes without the motor. Just swap the motor over to the new regulator. That regulator is a real PITA to repair if it's broken. Better a new one. I'm currently dealing with the issue on my '91 Carat - Driver's side.
