Greetings, I concur. I battled this problem (water in gas) for a year before finding the bad grommets. A belt-and-suspender fix, IMHO, would be wheel arch liners. If VW had included them we probably would not be plagued with so much seam rust. Sincerely, Ken Lewis

What did the debris consist of?

I'm sure you checked for this but I know from experience that a failing or failed grommet at the valve on fuel expansion tank(s) can allow water and debris in. How much of it passes into the fuel tank, I don't know.
