What have you got to lose to try it and see if YOU like it :-)

From what you say, it sounds like it would work well...especially because of its availability to you. I used a pergo flooring with foam already attached because I had a pile of it left over from another project I had...it's not my favorite, but it covers the sheet metal well.

My only concern with your solution would be the carpet sliding around on the smooth surface, but maybe it's more grippy than I'm thinking...
