This is for an '81 having the tank with smaller outlet but.... I found no difference in pump cavitation noise running an OEM type pre pump filter or not. (I'd installed a post pump filter like the later models). So with a tank having a larger outlet, I'd think adding a filter would not cause the pump to get noisier or become noisy due to cavitation. The Vanagon Bosch fuel pumps I've looked at all had a mesh screen near the inlet. From what I saw, it's not intended to be a fine particulate filter. Neil.
