I mentioned that I'll go to D-rated again when replacing tires the next time, for added weight-bearing and blowout-reducing sidewall rigidity on dirt and all surfaces. At that time I will completely re-evaluate front vs. rear pressures based on small adjustments until the vans handles as good as I can get it to.
My pressure balance concepts are not as much about C vs. D ratings as they are about more pressure in the front vs. the rear — but I did detail the things to consider when determining what feels best.
Please try it and consider why the VW engineers came up with the pressures they did, tires have advanced amazingly since any of our vans were built, and potential legal issues are also considered when they determined the pressures. I'm not suggesting anyone exceed recommended pressures listed on their sidewalls, though did explain those are conservative per potential legal fallout as well. Think Firestone v. Ford Explorer issue years ago… which, in my view after witnessing many Ford Explorers driving waaaay too fast in the West, were as much about that vehicle apparently feeling more stable than other SUVs at excessive speeds as it was about a tire defect. But on that, that's a guess.
